This weekend, Israel lost a former Prime Minister, and the Jewish People lost one of our leaders and heroes, Ariel Sharon, z”l

Former Israeli Prime Minister Sharon, a decorated warrior who took courageous and controversial steps for peace, died January 11, after eight years in a coma since suffering a stroke in 2006. He was 85. The former general’s funeral was held today in Israel, with dignitaries from around the world flying to Israel to pay their last respects.

As a school and community passionately and steadfastly committed to the Jewish People and the State of Israel, today Scheck Hillel Community School honored, paid tribute and commemorated this sad, meaningful historic time in a number of ways.

As parents entered campus this morning, they received a special prayer in memory of Sharon, z”l, to recite in his memory during the day. Grades 3-12 then gathered to lower our Israeli flag. All classes and minyanim across campus, from Kindergarten through Grade 12, shared a special prayer. In the afternoon, Grades 6-12 came together for assemblies where they lit a candle in his memory, read tehilim, watched a film about his remarkable life and, led by Mr. Yaron Miara, our Shaliach from Israel, shared songs that reflected the moment. Rabbi Joshua Spodek and Mr. Yuval Miara presented Sharon’s story about how he rose as one of Israel’s mightiest, protecting Israel in every way. The assemblies closed with our hundreds of student voices united by the words of Hatikvah.

May the Sharon family, the people of Israel and Jews around the world be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
