“Together, we can move mountains!”

Those inspirational words from teacher Mrs. Maxine Erving are what rallied the troops of Grade 5 Wednesday when they took off for a day of experiential learning, fun and mitzvot outside the classroom.  Experiential education (to learn through experience) teaches real-life skills – those that one might use in school or work in daily life – in the form of simple (and fun!) initiatives.

The day included a team-building ropes course program at Tigertail Lake Recreational Center in Dania Beach and a tikkun olam project of cleaning Hollywood North Beach Park. Armed with gloves and bags, the children forged into the trash left behind by beach visitors, leaving the beautiful areas clean once again.

As a result of their enthusiasm, Grade 5 students have since organized a Trash Club under the supervision of Mrs. Nancy Penchev. They will meet once a month on Wednesdays to clean up campus.

“The children enjoyed a super day together, cleaning, bonding with one another and experiencing a mitzvah,” Mrs. Erving said.

Faculty chaperones included Mrs. Rose Joh, Mrs. Anne Sweet, Mrs. Erving, Mrs. Mayra Alejo, Ms. Mazal Kuba, Mrs. Penchev and Rabbi Shmuel Druin.  Thanks to all!
