Scheck Hillel Community School has been selected to participate in a ground-breaking international language research study being conducted by three universities and headed by one of the foremost experts in language development. Scheck Hillel proudly represents 20 countries beyond the USA, including Brazil, France, Russia, South Africa and more. With an international community like ours, many students come to school already speaking two or more languages...That's why researchers from the University of Delaware, Temple University, and Smith College, led by Dr. Roberta Golinkoff, have chosen Scheck Hillel as one of only three research sites on the East Coast.

The computer-based assessment, which tests vocabulary, syntax and comprehension, will be given to Spanish-English bilingual students ages 3-5 beginning the week of January 12. This study will help produce an educational assessment tool designed to help bilingual youngsters. Language skills in the early childhood years are highly predictive of later academic achievement; access to data from a research opportunity like this will be extremely beneficial in helping teachers across the country identify where young students excel and where they might need a little extra help. What a fabulous way to reinforce Scheck Hillel’s position on the global map as an educational leader and to start forming building blocks to success from the very start!  If your child has been invited to participate and you have any questions prior to giving parental consent, please call Dr. Helen Chaset (ext. 165) or Dr. Monica Wagenberg (ext. 139).
