Thanksgivukkah assemblies. Scheck Hillel in Exotic Places Photo Contest. Yom Iyun-Day of Learning. A Mayflower Menorah. Within the theme of Hakrat Hatov – gratitude – all of this and more ushered in Chanukah and Thanksgiving at Scheck Hillel in this short but very full week.

Building off of last week’s Grade 6-8 chessed projects, students and faculty shared so much to mark Chanukah and Thanksgiving coinciding for the first time in more than a century. Gratitude certainly was a teachable moment.

ECE-Grade 5 students shared in Hebrew and English song Tuesday dressed in turkey costumes and winter-ready gloves, hats and scarves to prep for the snowy Chanukah and Thanksgiving most of the country will endure this week. Thank you to Yuval Miara and all of our arts and Judaic Studies faculty for the special morning. WPLG-10 and WSVN-7 both covered the events in last night's news. Look for coverage in the Miami Herald and the Jewish Journal.

Today’s Chanukah Yom Iyun in Grades 9-12 centers around the theme of, "Let Your Jew Shine Through (To Thine Own Self Be True)." Its aim is to reinforce how we, as modern Jews, fully engage in our 21st century world, embracing advances in technology, sciences and the arts, while also maintaining and strengthening our Jewish identity. In the modified six-period schedule, students are learning about Chanukah-related probabilities and statistics in their math class, collaborating on marketing and branding ideas for Chanukah in their joint Language Arts/IB Design session, exploring Olympic-related historical data in order to formulate a hypothesis with their science teachers, mine primary source documents to reveal the true history of Chanukah in their Humanities lesson, experiencing Israeli culture with their Hebrew teachers while listening and translating popular Israeli Chanukah songs and proposing ideas for how to best accomplish the goal of Pirsumei Nisa (publicizing the miracle) in their Judaics periods. Led by Rabbi Avi Spodek and produced as a collaboration of 25 different Judaic Studies and General Studies faculty members; mazel tov and thank you to all!
