On November 27, the stars of many favorite children's books came alive and read to Scheck Hillel Community School’s youngest students. The list of stars follows, including the faculty/staff volunteer who joined in the fun (in costume):

Cat in the Hat (Rabbi Josh Spodek), Angelina the Ballerina (Rebecca Schiller), Chanukah bakers (Anna Meytal and Samantha Weinshel), Mrs. Frizzle (Roberta Meisel), Howard B Wigglebottom (Rachel Zissel) , Pete the Cat (Leanne Weinbrot), Amelia Bedelia (Sandy Gruskin), Madeline (Joanna Slochowski), Miss Smith (Jessamyn Olson), Catty Jones (Linda Shapanka), The Grouchy Ladybug (Dr. Monica Wagenberg), Dora the Explorer (Beatrice Anzola and Dora Lichtenstein), Fancy Nancy (Nancy Penchev), Elephant and Piggie (Jamie Serelson and Jenna Kraft), Pigeon (Beverly Silverman), Naked Mole Rat (Raquel Heisler), Johnny Appleseed's mother (Rose Joh), Adam Sandler (Rabbi Shmuel Druin), and Viola Swamp (Eileen Ginzburg).

Students in Kindergarten-Grade 5 rotated classrooms to meet the characters, listen to stories and do activities with the stars. They compared stories, danced, made puppets, learned how saying mean things hurts more than feelings, rhymed words and completed puzzles. After reading to the students, the stars visited Early Childhood classrooms.

The day was a success and enjoyed by all. Students experienced the joy of children's books coming alive, and faculty relived their favorites by exploring the world of make-believe. Scheck Hillel’s next literacy day will be March 3 in celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday.
