Clik here to view.A lover of books since forever ago – at least since when she started Scheck Hillel Community School at the age of three years old – Sarah Dreyfuss, now Grade 10, has paired her love of reading with her passion for community service.
“When I was little, I would read every second,” Dreyfuss said.
This past summer, Sarah started collecting new and used books to send to public libraries in underprivileged communities in South Florida and to Books for Africa, the largest shipper of donated text and library books to Africa, which shipped 2.2 million books to 22 African countries last year.
Sarah already has collected 1,000 books, well toward her goal of 3,000. She will hold fundraisers this year to help pay to have the books shipped to the Books for Africa warehouse in Michigan. She also has made this global initiative her International Baccalaureate Personal Project, the culminating event of the five-year Middle Years Program. Students in Grade 10 find projects they are passionate about and dedicate the year to developing them, with the guidance of personal mentors.
“I love reading and wanted to donate books to people who would appreciate them,” she said.
To donate your own books to this project, please drop them off in Scheck Hillel's Kunin Library Media Center or contact Sarah Dreyfuss directly.
