From the moment you drove onto campus today, you felt a love for Israel that’s so deep, so powerful…so Scheck Hillel!
The sights, sounds, tastes and events of today all were part of our Yom HaAtzmaut programming. Families were welcomed to campus by faculty and staff enthusiastically waving oversized Israeli flags and greetings of ‘Boker tov’ and ‘Good morning!’ Israeli music was pumped throughout the campus sound system to add to the fun birthday energy. It was only 8 am, and the Yom Ha’Atzmaut ruach was already in full swing!
To kick-off the day’s activities, Juda and Maria Diener Lower School students attended an assembly where they sang, danced, and celebrated Israel’s independence and 66th birthday. After the assembly, the Early Childhood Education students journeyed through Israel. Our ECE teachers transformed their classrooms into popular Israeli locations such as the Kotel, the Dead Sea, Tel-Aviv, and the Shuk. ECE students visited each of the classrooms, learning about Israel’s unique culture and geography…and even relaxed with Dead Sea spa treatments and shopping the shuk! The Yom Ha’Atzmaut fun continued throughout the day for PKT-Grade 5. Students made Havdala candles, baked homemade pita and even went for pony rides.
Samuel and Henrietta Scheck Middle School and Ben Lipson Upper School students started their day with special extended morning tefilah sessions. Grades 6-8 later created Israeli art projects, danced to Israeli music and baked pita bread. In between standard classroom studies, Grades 9-12 shared an Israeli lunch and “Let’s Make a Deal: Israel Style”. All of these activities provided valuable opportunities to learn about Israel’s independence.
