Catching with Two Hands

On Thursday, Scheck Hillel Community School had the incredible opportunity to welcome Thomas Steinberg to campus through our Signature Speaker Series to share thoughts of inspiration - and many laughs - with our Grade 9-12 students. Mr. Steinberg is President/CEO of TS Partners, an international, diversified investment firm, and is the former President of Tisch Family Interests. Through his integral role with the Tisch family and the development of MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Giants and New York Jets, many of his stories surround football. More important than any corporate milestone, however, the greatest touchdown was the decision he made years ago as a young Stanford grad student to choose Torah as the guidebook that would take him through life. The greatest gift he gave himself was to re-discover his own Jewish identity and commit to a life of Torah as a passionate member of the Jewish People.

Perhaps as the strongest extension of Mr. Steinberg’s heart, he is Chairman of the Meor Institute, which focuses on students attending America’s leading academic campuses with large Jewish populations. Meor is across the country, from Cornell, University of Pennsylvania and Boston University to the University of California and Stanford, and so many schools in between. Meor identifies students with promising leadership qualities and provides leadership development and text-based learning commensurate with the sophistication of these students while on a college campus.

Mr. Steinberg joined Scheck Hillel from Yerushalayim as a true representation of what our school mission guides our students to become: exemplary global citizens with enduring Jewish Identity and values. His message to our students was a powerful one. Embracing Mr. Steinberg’s advice to “catch with two hands" and never let go of Torah and Jewish identity, one Grade 10 student remarked, “He really made me appreciate my Jewish education and the gift of Scheck Hillel a little more. I am definitely going to try to grab on to these last few years here with two hands.”
